Description

Researching at The Filson is one the most versatile services we provide to the community, but if you're unaccustomed to card catalogs, reference materials, or looking though historical documents, it can be an intimidating process. So for three days in January, The Filson will be having How-to Seminars, where we introduce you to all the ins and outs of our research tools and walk you step-by-step through some of the most popular and effective research methods.

January 20 - How to Do Genealogy at The Filson
Genealogical research is one of the most popular uses of The Filson’s collections. In addition to our unique family papers and photographs, we have an extensive library with genealogical records from the state of Kentucky and the Ohio Valley region. We also provide digital access to several genealogical databases, allowing you to follow the roots of your family tree as deep as the records go. Associate Curators of Collections Cassie Bratcher and Jana Meyer will introduce you to these resources and teach you the best methods of tracing your family history at The Filson.

January 26 - How to Use the Collections Reading Room and Research Tools
The Filson holds over a million historic documents and manuscripts; tens of thousands of historic photographs, films, and prints; and a library of 50,000 titles of local, regional, and national interest. Have you ever wondered how you can find the information you want in all those places to look? Associate Curators of Collections Heather Potter and Aaron Rosenblum will introduce you to the research process in the Library and Special Collections reading rooms and will also show you how to use our research tools from home.

January 31 – Why to Use the Special Collections and How to Get Started
Interested in researching in the archives but not sure how to start? Associate Curator of Collections Johna Ebling tells you why collections research is for everyone—not just historians. Hear stories about how people have used their research from the Filson’s collections to film movies, write books, create murals, and support their community. Learn how your hobbies and professional interests can be aided by our archives.
