Description

Join the Filson Historical Society for a Jewish Genealogy Workshop led by Avraham Groll, Director of JewishGen.org. This workshop will consist of two informational sessions and a viewing of the Filson’s Connecting the Dots: Exploring Your Family History exhibit, which spotlights family genealogy through items of material culture. Sessions include: Intro to JewishGen & Jewish Genealogy: JewishGen.org offers both archival and networking components that are relied upon by thousands of people each day. In this presentation, Avraham Groll discusses common challenges that people encounter when researching their family history, and how JewishGen can help. This session includes an overview of how to navigate the JewishGen Core Databases, along with step by step information needed for maximizing the potential benefit of JewishGen. Jewish Migration Patterns – Part 1 (How Did Jews Get To Europe?): This session will explore the main Jewish migration patterns from Antiquity through the 10th century. Using a multitude of sources, we will discuss how Jews reached the land of Israel, where they resettled after multiple expulsions, and under what conditions they lived. By understanding the Jewish migration patterns, and the circumstances under which they lived, we will be granted a deeper appreciation of our collective Jewish heritage and family history. As part of this discussion, we will also discuss the dividing line between Antiquity and the medieval era, and its ramifications on future Jewish settlement and living conditions, and the emergence of the Ashkenazic and Sephardic centers.   Avraham Groll, the Director of JewishGen.org, is passionate about connecting people with their Jewish roots, and helping them experience what it means to be part of the Jewish people. Avraham holds an MBA from Montclair State University, an MA in Judaic Studies from Touro College, and a BS in Business Administration from Ramapo college, and spent two years studying at Yeshiva Ohr Yerushalayim in Israel. He is a frequent lecturer on a variety of Jewish genealogical and historical topics.
