Description
Virginian Richard S. Ewell was a West Point graduate and Mexican War veteran that sided with his native state in the Civil War. Serving first under the famous Stonewall Jackson and then as a Corps commander himself, over the course of the war he lost a leg, gained a wife, and became a prisoner of war in the closing days of the conflict. In The Filson’s Brown-Ewell Family Papers letters written by Ewell chronicle his experience as a POW and his reflections on the war.
Jim Holmberg is a native of Louisville and holds a BA and MA from the University of Louisville in History. He joined the staff of The Filson in 1982 and currently serves as the Curator of Collections.
