Kentucky's disastrous Battle of Blue Licks came ten months after the British surrender at Yorktown effectively ended the American Revolution—at least in the East.  But 1782 was the "Year of Blood" for the Western frontier.  The brave, but rash, Kentuckians who fell into British and Indian trap at Blue Licks included many of the greatest leaders of the day, a third of them killed in the horrible defeat.  The site of the battle is now a state park with a giant obelisk on which is carved the names of the battle participants.       James Harrod missed the Battle of Blue Licks, laid up with a bad back.  He loaned his horse to John Isaacs who rode it to the battle where he lost it.  Yet Harrod's name is on the Blue Licks monument and Isaacs' is not!  More than 35 years ago a couple of CPAs—former Price Waterhouse auditors—stumbled upon the financial records of George Rogers Clark and the Western Commissioners and discovered the 182 participants of the last battle of the American Revolution are not entirely who we think they are.  Vince Akers will explain how claims for lost horses, saddles, guns and other property confused the participants list.  With the help of militia payroll lists, Revolutionary War pension statements and personal accounts, mostly from the Draper Manuscripts, numerous corrections to the roll of Blue Licks participants have been discovered.  This lecture unveils to the public for the first time the story behind the corrections along with many stories behind the corrected participants. Vince Akers has been a member of The Filson Historical Society for 45 years.  He inherited his life-long interest in early Kentucky history from a family steeped in local history.  For nearly fifty years he has been researching, writing and speaking about the Low Dutch settlements on the Kentucky frontier.
