Description

In the late 18th and early 19th century the members of the Tansel family of Kentucky were some of the best artisans in America, famous for the intricate and breath-taking designs carved into the powder horns they created. Very few of their horns remain today, and those that do have become priceless items for collectors. Luckily, a handful of these rare and beautiful artifacts are in the possession of The Filson’s archives.

Collector and writer Mel Hankla will discuss these and other artisan powder horns produced by the Tansel family. Mel Hankla is a collector, researcher, lecturer, writer, and historical actor devoted to Kentucky history. He has extensively researched the Kentucky Longrifle, and as a traditional craftsman himself, he has studied under master riflesmith Hershel House.
